Following the 2009 European Mega Drive Championships, both Portugal and England continue to cement their places in the overall rankings. Portgual remain first with their win record increased by 6% on last year, while England show no signs of relinquishing their last place status, which they have held since the Anglo-Irish Mega Drive Tournament in 2007. Ireland remain ahead of Germany in the standings by nine percentage points.

The European rankings are dominated by the Portuguese Mega Drive superstars. Alberto Campos and Dário Pelixo have been part of the European Championship winning team on three occasions, while Pedro Brangança has tasted European success twice. Dário Pelixo was supreme, as an individual, where he failed to lose a game. The fabled Irishmen who won the 2007 Championship silde down the rankings, having never returned to active competition, they are surpassed by the Portuguese. German legend Tobias Berg slips down the rankings, while Richard Neumann drops out of the top ten entirely.
German newcomer, Valerian Essinger, grabs sixth-place in the overall rankings ahead of Ireland's Stephen O'Keeffe and Portgual's Ferdinand Menéndez. Nobody from Team Hungary performed well enough to break into the top ten, while Daniel Smith holds onto tenth spot by a whisker, the only Englishman on the list.
