THE FOURTH MEGA DRIVE TOURNAMENT

The biggest surprise of the Fourth Tournament was the two times winner, Jorge Esteves, failure to return to the competition. This did, however, pave the way for a potential new champion, but returning to the line-up, for the first time since he won the First Tournament, was José Chança. The Fourth Tournament did not follow the theme of fighting games used at the Third, but instead saw a return to a more traditional range of games being used. It was Filipe Semião who won the competition. Filipe had reached Stage Two on every prior occasion (and being the losing finalist at the First Tournament) and it was in a duel on Super Street Fighter 2, against Orlando Silva, that he ended Jorge Esteves's two-tournament reign. Alberto Campos returned to Stage Three for the second successive tournament, but he was beaten by Filipe Semião, in the Semi-Finals, on Mortal Kombat 3. Defeated finalist, Orlando Silva, had been absent from Stage Three at the Third Tournament, but he had been a losing semi-finalist at the Second. Orlando beat Tiago Pedro, who made his debut in the final four, on Mortal Kombat to book his place in the final. Vítor, who had established himself as something of a fans-favourite, made his return after being absent at the Third Tournament, but was unable to progress beyond Stage One. First Tournament winner, José Chança was a shock casualty in the competition. Despite Group 1A being arguably the strongest of all the groups, José was expected to qualify to the next stage, but, to the dismay of all, he finished bottom of the group. José vowed to train hard before the Fifth Tournament…

STRUCTURE

The Fourth Tournament saw a return to a more familiar format following the Third Tournament's Stage One Swiss method experiment. Members were placed into four groups with the top three qualifying for the Second Stage. After being dropped to eight at the Third Tournament, the amount of people participating in Stage Two was expanded back to tweleve, four people in three groups, with the top of each group advancing to the Semi-Finals and the three second-places put in a playoff to determine the final Stage Three place. The Second Stage also saw the introducion of 4-player games and pitted each group member against the others; Four-points awarded for finishing first, two for second, one-point given for being third and nothing for ending up in last.
