| THE THIRD MEGA DRIVE TOURNAMENT |

The theme of the Third Tournament was fighting games. Currently this is the only time any Mega Drive competition in the world has focused solely on one specific genere. It was to a chorus of jeers that Jorge Esteves defeated David Magueijo in a Ken Vs Ken encounter on Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition. Having won the Second Mega Drive Tournament, Jorge Esteves became the only tournament member to successfully defend his title - maintaining a 100% record of winning the tournaments he entered. David Magueijo had made it as far as the Stage Two second placed playoffs at the previous tournament, but advanced into the final, beating the host, Alberto Campos, on Mortal Kombat. This was the first time Alberto Campos reached the Third Stage of the tournament, Márcio Costa completed the semi-final quarette. Both Arsénio Ferraz and Filipe Semião performed well in the First Stage of the tournament, but neither were able to advance into Stage Three, both finishing in third place of their Stage Two groups with nine-points. Fátima Campos, who had previously reached Stage Three in both the First and Second Tournaments was eliminated in Stage One.

The Third Tournament saw some dramatic changes to its structure, with the biggest occuring in Stage One. The groups were abandoned and instead all twenty-two players were paired off into groups and, using the Swiss method, played a series of seven games to determine the qualifiers for the Second Stage. Stage Two also underwent some minor changes. In both the First and Second Tournaments tweleve players took part in this phase of the tournament. The Third saw the number reduced to eight with the top two from each four-person group advancing to the Semi-Finals.
