THE SEVENTH MEGA DRIVE TOURNAMENT

The Seventh Portuguese Tournament took place on Saturday 16th September 2007 in the new location of Queluz. The shift in location caused some displacement among the members, however, fifteen was a very respectable turnout with many big names rising to the challenge. Certainly the Seventh Tournament was the strongest in terms of contestant quality.

The method of game selection was marginally different at the Seventh Tournament. While members had a choice of games, the choice was limited to twelve titles; Alien Storm, Combat Cars, Eternal Champions, General Chaos, Golden Axe, Greatest Heavyweights, International Sensible Soccer, International Superstar Soccer Deluxe, Klax, Pete Sampras Tennis, Pit-Fighter and Samurai Shodown. The Second Stage saw the four player games Acme All-Stars (Racing), Gauntlet 4, Mega Bomberman and Street Racer. The Semi-Finals were contested on NHL '96 and the Final on Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition.

David Magueijo was defending his title, with Alberto Campos and Filipe Semião marked as the most threatening of the opposition. Despite a good performance in the First Stage of the competition, David was eliminated in Stage Two with the two qualification places going to Alberto Campos and Ricardo Faria. It would be neither of these men who would win the tournament, that auspicious honour went the Dário Pelixo. An underdog from the start, Dário defied the odds on numerous occasions, winning the Stage One playoffs and beating Fátima Campos, with whom he finished level on points with in Stage Two, on a tiebraker game of Ms. Pac-Man. Dário becomes the sixth winner of the Portuguese Tournaments.

With the colossus of Mega Drive Championshipary now standing upon the International Stage, it is wondered how well Portugal will perform at a national level. Certainly the raw talent that exists here could be a force to be reckoned with, but which of their members will be called upon to represent their country?
