The 2009 European Mega Drive Championship was be fuelled by three domestic competitions from England, Germany and Portugal. Yet the Mega Drive Championship is not restricted solely to Europe, as the establishment of a Brazilian Mega Drive Championship bought the contests to South America and brings speculation that one day Mega Drive World Championship could be possible.

The oldest domestic competition now comprises of four contests per tournament. The main competition is a league, which now offers qualification to Europe, and had humble beginnings of three students trying to see which one was best. Taking place in Nottingham, the game selection in England is more rigid than other nations with each division possessing a strict game pool based on skill.

Setup in 2005 by avid Mega Drive player Alberto Campos, Portugal's competition is divided into three stages, with a number of members eliminated after each round. A wide array of games are used each tournament and are chosen randomly by the host. Contests are held in Lisbon, which was the location for the 2009 European Championship.

Brazil became the first non-European nation to establish a Mega Drive competition. Born from the Do Além series of tournaments, the "Mega Drive special" took place on 21st September 2008 and was won by Aldo. A Second Brazilian Mega Drive Championship is expected in 2009.

Following the 2008 European Mega Drive Championship, Germany set about establishing their own domestic tournament. Using an elimination league format the competition continues some of the continental traditions in terms of points scoring and game selection. Held in Nuremberg, Germany represents the first truly national competition, with people from across the country participating.

Evolving from the Gamesboro Genesis Cup of 2008, 2009 saw the United States of America join the array of countries hosting Mega Drive Championships. Held in the State of Georgia, teams (ranging from 1 -3 players) battled over six games in order to propel themselves up the leaderboard.
