Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was one of the three games used in the original tournament. It is a very simple game to play, however, it is quite tactically fiendish, with many routes to the finish and numerous rings and points to collect, passing the finishing line first is no guarantee of success, with the opponent getting an extra minute to scavenge the zone for extra goodies. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is used in both leagues and members play in either the Emerald Hill or Casino Night Zones with only score, time and rings now counted in the final tally. This is a huge change from the First Mega Drive Championship when every zone was played and all criteria used. Doc Shakib is currently the best player in the tournaments, however, he is a long way from bettering former member, Mr Smith's, record of thirty-six games undefeated. Captain Maltby maintained an anomalous six game drawing streak on Sonic 2 until he was beaten by Doc Shakib at the Eighteenth Championship.
