Lieutenant Gareth | | Captain Maltby |
|
|
Captain Maltby had the worst record on World Cup Italia '90; fourteen defeats in fourteen games, losing by more than twenty goals on three prior occasions.
Both he and Lieutenant Gareth had been promoted at the Fourteenth Tournament, with Lieutenant Gareth comfortably winning the league, Captain Maltby was promoted in second spot when it was decided to expand Division One to five members. While both men had been secure at the top of Division Two in the last tournament, the more difficult nature of the top league was telling this time round. Points were scarce for the pair with one win between them they trailed behind Mr Smith, Lord Dilks and Baron Von Hooton.

Despite having never played a single tournament game of Italia '90 Lieutenant Gareth was expected to win this game easily and within 6 minutes he had taken the lead over Captain Maltby after some poor clearances by West Germany were punished. Lieutenant Gareth doubled his advantage with 25 minutes on the counter. After the first goal the game had descended into a dull midfield melee with only the occasional feeble attempt on goal, however, following the second goal the game sparked into life. Lieutenant Gareth was unlucky not to go 3-0 up. With 29 minutes there was some scrappy play in the West German box, Captain Maltby was forced to clear off the line, however, the ball went to an attacker on the edge of the area who chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to set up a hear, which just went over. Captain
Maltby then had a few chances to claw back a goal. However, the French defence
remained resolute in front of a shaky looking keeper who blocked some potentially
devastating shots three times. The third goal arrived with the timer on 41 minutes. Some poor clearances from Captain Maltby's defence, and even shoddier goalkeeping, was punished and with the score at 3-0, combined with Captain Maltby's previous record
and with half time looming large, the game seemed destined to paddle into tedium for the second half. Yet there was a twist in the story.

Almost immediately from kick-off West Germany powered their way up field. The ball was crossed in from the left, the attacker met with the ball and gave a cheeky little header over the goalkeeper only for the shot to cannon off the post and to the defender. A brief moment of hesitancy from Lieutenant Gareth paid dearly as a second attacker slid in and blasted the ball into the net. Going into half-time the score was 3-1 to Lieutenant Gareth. Captain Maltby's late goal gave him hope, however, the advantage still lay with the French. Captain Maltby added a second goal with just 46 minutes on the clock. His direct drive up the field caused the goalkeeper to become stranded and he scored an unmissable shot from the 6-yard-box. The equalizer was not long in coming either, at 51 minutes the French goalkeeper tossed the ball out straight to an attacker who launched an overhead kick, which sailed into the box, levelling the score at 3-3. The West Germans then proceeded to pile on the pressure and at 64 minutes they finally took the lead. Lieutenant Gareth's reply was instant and he quickly pulled the score back, only for Captain Maltby to once again take the lead four minutes later when in a crowded box the ball was bundled into the net and he lead again, the score now 5-4. Lieutenant Gareth went on the attack and the French came close with the ball hitting the crossbar before being hacked away by the defence. On 84 minutes Captain Maltby gave himself a two-goal advantage, with poor positioning from the goalkeeper causing the French to concede from a relatively simple tap in. For the remainder of the game the French held onto the possession, however, they were unable to make it pay. Time up occurring just when the French had broken into the West German box. Lieutenant Gareth later claimed he was "just about to score his fifth." while at full time Captain Maltby leapt from his chair and ran around the hall cheering. He had just won his first victory on World Cup Italia '90.
